The baby elephants were named Carl, Fien (meaning “beauty” in Dutch) and Draay (meaning “the stubborn one” in Dutch). Soon after their birth the youngsters were taken to the Netherlands from where they were transported first to Brest and then to the Tallinn Zoo in the summer of 1985. Back then the elephants were only 1.5 meters high and found their initial home in the reconstructed house built specially for the warm-loving cloven hoofed animals. In 1989, they moved to the new elephant house where they still live today and bring joy to all visitors of the zoo. Our elephants have grown substantially throughout the years, their current shoulder height and weight being the following: Fien- 2.8 m and 4,950 kg; Draay- 2.7 m and 4,850 kg and Carl- 3.3 m and over 6,000 kg. Being a neighbour to the zoo, the Rocca al Mare Shopping Centre acts as a caring sponsor to the elephants and provides for their high demand for food and general well-being.
